I’ve been reading (and loving) Jay Kirk’s Kingdom Under Glass and I just learned that when the Brooklyn Bridge was first erected, it was the tallest man-made structure on earth and that PT Barnum (of The Greatest Show On Earth fame) led a pack of 21 elephants across it as a spectacle displaying the bridge’s great strength. Leading the pack, was the world’s most beloved elephant, Jumbo, who would die a few years later by being struck by a train Ontario and who’s body would be preserved by the father of modern taxidermy, the one-and-only Carl Ackely.
